meeting of NGOs in Washington, D.C. in response to the need for an NGO
network on biodiversity issues. BIONET's mission is to advocate the
effective implementation of the Biodiversity Convention worldwide,
primarily through coordinated, joint NGO programs and information
dissemination designed to catalyze governmental action.

-Earthlink- Earthlink works on tropical rainforests issues such as
conservation. They have projects and/or partners in Belize, Brazil,
Columbia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Philippines and South Africa. Together
with local populations they design strategies and measurers to protect

-Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)- is a not-for-profit environmental
advocacy group with four main goals: stabilizing the Earth's climate,
safeguarding the world's oceans, protecting human health, and
defending and restoring biodiversity. Active in West and Central

-Friends of the Earth (England, Wales and Northern Ireland)- is an
environmental group working on energy, wildlife, pollution and
transport. Their forest program concentrates on tropical forests and
in particular the timber trade in forest destruction. They completed
a large report on illegal logging in West Africa and are campaigning
against Exxon Oil Company and their potential oil pipeline in
Chad/Cameroon.

-Friends of the Earth France (Les Amis de la Terre)- involves itself
in the protection of the environment, focusing on the environmental
issues dealing with daily life, and trying to strengthen North/South
states relations. New projects will focus on French bilateral aid in
Africa.

-IUCN- was established in Fontainebleau, France on October 5, 1948 as
the "International Union for the Protection of Nature" of IUPN. Today
it is a union of governments, government agencies, and non-
governmental organisations working at the field and policy levels,
together with scientists and experts, to protect nature. They are
based in Switzerland. Some examples of IUCN's work include: Restoring
a Wetland Ecosystem in Cameroon and Working to conserve the Zambezi
river basin in Southern Africa.

-NESDA (Network for Environment and Sustainable Development in
Africa)- NESDA is based in the Ivory Coast. A resource and forum of
African experts in the management of environment and natural
resources.

-S.A.V.E.- is dedicated to the protection of a valuable wetland next
to the Vaal River in South Africa. SASOL, a large South African
petrochemical conglomerate, intends open cast coal mining on the banks
of the Vaal River in the wetland and a proclaimed nature reserve, a
very ecologically sensitive area. Campaigns to prevent SASOL from
mining the banks of the VAAL River in South Africa.

-Wetlands International - Africa, Europe, Middle East- mission is to
sustain and restore wetlands, their resources and biodiversity for
future generations through research, information exchange and

-World Wide Fund for Nature- is the world's largest independent
conservation organization, with around 5 million supporters and a

World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC)- With a staff of over 60,
WCMC provides information services on conservation and sustainable use
of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop
information systems of their own. It was established by IUCN, WWF,

-The World Wide Fund for Nature in the Netherlands (WNF)- An
independent organization operating worldwide has been actively and
successfully involved in protecting endangered animals, plants and
their habitats since 1961. WWF Netherlands is part of the

-World Resources Institute (WRI)- Their mission is to move human
society to live in ways that protect Earth's environment and its
capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and
future generations. Cameroon is now housing the pilot site of WRI's

-European Tropical Forest Research Network- Established in 1991, the
European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) is a forum for
communication between European organizations, researchers, EU
institutions and others concerned with subtropical forest research.
The ETFRN Network seeks to promote the involvement of European
research expertise towards the conservation and wise use of forests
and woodlands in tropical and subtropical countries.

-Greenpeace- Greenpeace is working around the world to save ancient
forests from destruction and to stop destructive logging practices
through the use of non-violent actions, scientific research,

-Both Ends- provides services to NGOs in Africa, Asia, Latin America,
and Eastern Europe working on environment, development, and social
justice. One of Both Ends' major areas of work is forests.

-CARPE (Central African Regional Program for the Environment)- The
CARPE project is a 5-year, $14 million regional project, funded by the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Their
twenty-year goal is to reduce the rate of deforestation of the
tropical forests of the Congo Basin and conserve the biodiversity
contained within them. Thus, in the long term, they hope to avert
potentially negative changes in global and regional climate.

-ECOFAC- Conservation et Utilisation Rationnelle des EcosystSmes
Forestiers en Afrique Centrale is a regional forest conservation
project funded by the European Union and operating in 6 countries in
central Africa (Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon,
Central African Republic and Sao Tom, Principe).

-Fern- is an NGO created in 1995 by the World Rainforest Movement. It
keeps track of EU tropical forest activities. They have offices in
Brussels and in the UK. They advocate changes in EU activities in
order to achieve conservation and sustainable management of forests,
respect for the rights of forest peoples, and greater transparency in
EU aid to tropical forest countries. Fern publishes a concise monthly
bulletin called EU Forest Watch. It publishes specialized briefing

body that develops standards for responsible forest management and

-Global 200 EcoRegions- working to protect Africa's Richest
Rainforests: The Guinean Congolean forests. The tropical moist forests

-IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development)-
IIED's principal aim is to improve the management of natural resources

-Netherlands Committee for IUCN- Since 1994, NC-IUCN functions as a

-The Tropenbos Foundation ("Tropenbos" is Dutch for Tropical
Rainforest)- The Tropenbos Foundation was established in July 1988.
They formulate, coordinate and finance objective oriented research

-World Rainforest Movement- is a global network of citizens' groups of

World Conservation Union (IUCN) have joined forces to develop a common
policy position on forests, "Forests for Life," to resolve two
critical problems of deforestation and loss of forest quality. The

-The Biosynergy Institute, Bushmeat Project- The Bushmeat Project has

-APFT- is a multi-disciplinary project sponsored by the European

-Project Underground- Project Underground exists as a vehicle for the
environmental, human rights and indigenous rights movements to carry
out focused campaigns against abusive extractive resource activity.
They seek to systematically deal with the problems created by the

abuses by the corporations involved in these sectors and by building
capacity amongst communities facing mineral and energy development to

-Centro Internazionale Crocevia- They work on indigenous peoples'
issues among others, on field projects, and in advocacy. One of
Crocevia's programs is the "Reform the World Bank Campaign," a
coalition of 37 Italian NGOs active on human rights, environment and
