The Cove/Mallard Coalition is asking that people contact Region 1
Supervisor Dale Bozworth, Nez Perce National Forest Supervisor Coy Jemmet,
and National Marine Fisheries Director William Steele by mail phone or fax.

The Nez Perce National Forest, in complete defiance of the Endangered
Species Act, continues to allow Shearer Lumber Products to continue logging
operations on the Jack Timber Sale. This illegal operation has been
continuing since Steelhead Trout was listed as threatened on October 17,
1997 by National Marine Fisheries.

Under the provisions of the act, once a species is listed, all
irretrievable and irreversible commitments of resources must stop until
critical habitat is designated, a biological opinion is prepared, and
consultation with NMFS is completed. Nez Perce National Forest knows that
Steelhead Trout are present in the lower reaches of Big Mallard Creek, yet
they continue to allow logging. The Jack Timber Sale road crossed
tributaries of Jack Creek (which flows into Big Mallard Creek) 18 times.

Monitoring by activists on the ground has revealed massive sediment
problems near cutting units and on the road. We ask that you mention the
above information to these officials and ask them to immediately halt all
activities in Cove/Mallard until the consultation process is completed as
required by the Endangered Species Act.
