Dear Friends of the Forests,

Let's help get Julia down from Luna! If you can make the time, please
write, call, or fax the contacts below. A sample letter is included.

The sample letter was necessarily kept simple, but a good point not
made is that Luna is close to the top of a bad mudslide that
destroyed at least 7 homes on January 1st, 1997. Basically, none of
the hillside should be logged, not just a 200' buffer zone around
Luna. Luna lives in a now fragile area, after careless logging
weakened the earth.

In fact, another mudslide is in the works and waiting to happen! A
huge wall of debris has been collecting on the mountain, and once the
heavy rains hit it will all come down! Pacific Lumber knows this, and
has been going to great expense to build a basin at the bottom of the
mountain to catch this inevitable wall of debris. Even though they
are making an effort, it is too little, too late...

The note below was written by Redwood Mary, a friend and ally of
Julia's, and a strong advocate of preserving the ancient redwoods.

Please pass this on to your concerned friends.

Thank you,

Christine

We Need An International Effort - A Big Push!

Taking Action To Save The Last Redwood Ecosystems On the Planet and
Bringing Julia down!

I just got off the phone with Julia Butterfly Hill and one of the
things I asked her is what can people do to help right now...her
reply was for people to help with letters and phone calls ( see
below). Julia's representatives are in in negotiation with Maxxam's
Pacific Lumber Company. Julia wants a 200 ft. Buffer zone that
includes protection of the over 1000 year old ancient Redwood named
LUNA.

Julia is doing incredibly well-- but the cold is hitting us here on
the North Coast and it is so cold up in Luna that Julia is spending
the day wearing seven to nine layers to keep warm...she does have a
sleeping bag that keeps her warm...I spoke to Nate Madsen who is in a
tree sit 1 hour North of Julia and he is also courageously hanging
on. There are now a total of 11 treesits in The Pacific Northwest.

PLIGHT OF THE REDWOODS CAMPAIGN is coordinating an urban/rural
linkage think tank to start working on ways to build coalitions to
pressure California's Gov. Davis to Help Protect Our Redwood
Ecosystems. Our first gathering will be in Oakland California in
January.

Pressure from around the world will help!

FOR YOUR NEWSLETTER AND EMAIL LISTS:

The following are three critical actions that you can take:

#1 Take Action for Luna and Our Forests

It has now been over 600 days since Julia Butterfly first ascended
into Luna's branches, yet the future for this ancient redwood and the
surrounding hillside still remains uncertain. Now more than ever it
is imperative that we begin to exert our collective strength upon the
Pacific Lumber Company and its owner Charles Hurwitz' Maxxam Corp. in
order to achieve permanent protection for Luna. We are calling for
your participation in a mass letter writing, call-in, and fax-in
campaign. If each person visiting this site participates at least
once by writing, calling, and faxing both PL and Maxxam we will make
a difference.

Please write, call, and fax representatives of the Pacific Lumber
Company and Maxxam at the addresses and numbers listed below. Tell
them that you support Julia Butterfly's efforts and that they must
work toward granting permanent protection for the ancient redwood
Luna and a sufficient buffer zone on the surrounding hillside. We
stand for love and respect for all life, so please be respectful in
your communications with the employees of these companies. The
secretary on the other end of the line does not make company policy
and may be on your side. A sample letter is located below.

John A. Campbell, President
The Pacific Lumber Company

Dear Mr. Campbell,

Another winter is approaching, as you well know, and Julia Butterfly
Hill remains in Luna waiting for the Pacific Lumber Company and
Maxxam Corporation to bring this protection effort to a safe
conclusion. August 12th, 1999 marked Julia's 20th month in Luna, and
with no solution in sight, the increasing world media attention
continues to cast Maxxam and Pacific Lumber in a negative light.
September 17th is the anniversary of the death of David Gypsy Chain,
and we ask in memory of his Spirit that you spare Luna and the
surrounding hillside. The American and international public demand
the health and safety of Luna and Julia; I urge you and the Pacific
Lumber Company now to come forward to work toward a solution.

By agreeing to spare Luna and the surrounding hillside from future
timber harvest activity, you will surely enhance the reputation of
your companies in the public eye, and guarantee that this
internationally observed event concludes with a safe and acceptable
ending. On behalf of the last of our remaining old growth redwood
forests, and in particular on behalf of the ancient redwood Luna, I
am calling upon you to look within your heart and do what will be in
the best interest of all parties involved by providing permanent
protection for Luna.

Our eyes are on you.

With respect for all life,
