The Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha will develop and conserve the eighty
acre hot wet tropical forest reserve Kalumukalana in the Wennappuwa
electorate at Bujjampola for the benefit of schoolchildren,
researchers and naturalists, to gather information on flora in hot wet
forests of the by gone era of Sri Lanka, which were cleared for
setting up coconut plantations, said Mr. W.A. Travin Fernando,
Chairman of the Wennappuwa PS in a special statement to the media.
He said he has written to the authorities to release this forest
reservation to the Sabha; to develop it as a botanical garden with
facilities to identify and study various species of flora attached to
low country hot wet forest vegetation of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Fernando said, the PS has drawn up a plan to develop Kalumukalana
as a blend of forest reserve, herbarium, botanical garden, recreation
centre and a harmonious excursion spot, for local and foreign
tourists, students and holiday makers.. Under the plan modern
conveniences snack bars, refreshment centres, eating houses, and
recreation to children will be provided.
He said the surrounding environment of Kalumukalana is enchanting to
any visitor with the rustic beauty such as eye catching green paddy
fields extending far and wide, green meadows, singing birds, brooks
and streams flowing with crystal clear water, village damsels engaged
in farming activities and other rural attractions. Above all rustic
harmony is absorbing.
