TAIYUAN, December 21 - China's Shanxi province, located on the ecologically-weak loess plateau in north China, has decided to launch a natural forest conservation project along the Yellow River, China's second longest river.

According to a provincial government source, the project will cover two thirds of the province's territory.

The project will enhance management and protection of the existing forests and plant more trees and grass. Upon the completion of the project, the province will have a further 230, 000 hectares of forest and will increase its forest coverage rate by 2.2 percentage points.

Shanxi, which is located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, has long had serious soil erosion problems.
