HANOI (Aug. 16) XINHUA - Vietnam has planted 154,700 hectares of
forests in the first seven months of this year, a year-to-year
increase of 3.34 percent, the Vietnam News Agency reported Monday.
In July alone, 25,200 hectares of concentrated forests were planted
and 35,000 more hectares were rehabilitated, according to Ministry of
Agriculture and Rural Development reports.
More than 5,000 hectares were forested by aerial seeding in remote
and mountainous areas of the country's northwestern province of Lai
Chau, with survival rate ranging between 80 and 90 percent.
Vietnam is carrying out a program to plant 5 million hectares of
forests by the year 2010, thus raising forest coverage to 43 percent
from nearly 30 percent at present.
The country plans to grow 310,000 hectares of forests this year.
