BRASILIA, Brazil, December 17, 1999 (ENS) - Brazil's National
Environment Fund (FNMA) has outlined programs it will launch in 2000
as part of the government's four-year investment plan, the Plano
Plurianual. This plan covers the last three years of the incumbent
government and the first year of the next government.
The projects include Brazil Plays Clean program (Brasil Joga Limpo)
which targets urban solid waste collection, transport and final
disposal for municipalities with populations between 20,000 to 50,000,
and the implementation of waste minimization programs.
Brazil's parks and natural resource program (Parques do Brasil,
Florestar, Biovida e Recursos Pesqueiros) will also be implemented
next year. It entails strengthening conservation units for the
promotion of sustainable land management and fishing policies.
Since it was established, FNMA programs have financed US$17.8 million
towards 566 projects, with the majority of funds, 71 percent, going to
environmental education, technological development and control.
