BRASILIA (July 3) XINHUA - Brazil is working on a sustainable
development program for forestry resources, the Environment Ministry
said Saturday.

The program -- National Forestry Program (Pronaflor) -- foresees the
planting of six million hectares of forests with an annual output of
150 million cubic meters of lumber and 1.5 million job opportunities.

The program will be jointly implemented by the Environment Ministry,
the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural
Resources and the private sector.

Brazil has an area of 442 million hectares of forests with a wood
reserve of 65.8 billion cubic meters.

The forest area has shrunk over the past years because of the
excessive exploitation.
