Mecominas, the construction company contracted to pave the 42km stretch of the Trans-Amazonia Roadway between Marabá and Itupiranga has formally abandoned the project, due to the fact that the costs of paving the road would exceed the government's remuneration of R$ 7.6 million. According to the National Department of Motorways (DNER), the agency will now contact the other companies that bid with Mecominas to undertake the construction in 1997. If none is willing to take up the contract, a new contest will be arranged in order to find a new contractor.
