The mayor of the town of Novo Progresso, Pará, as well as numerous farmers living there, will register legal action with the Federal Court in order to prevent the demarcation of the Baú reservation of the Kayapo Indians living nearby. The order to demarcate the territory was made by Minister of Justice José Gregori, who promised compensation for those farmers whose land falls within the reservation. The Federal Police already had to prevent a conflict between Novo Progresso farmers and FUNAI (National Indian Foundation) workers attempting to carry out the demarcation. Representatives in the Pará Legislative Assembly are concerned about the possibility of violence and are considering the creation of a parliamentary commission to accompany the proceedings.
