FUNAI, the National Indian Foundation, is adopting a new initiative to use direct dialogue with the Indian nations to define and develop the most appropriate forms of self-sustaining productivity in the Indian villages. Belém is the first city to benefit from this national initiative, with the seminar Sustainable Development in Indian Lands, with representatives from the states of Pará, Amapá, and Maranhão. Some 50 Indians and 20 representatives from regional FUNAI administrations, as well as representatives from organisations in favour of sustainable development in the Amazon, took part in the seminar. The seminar will take place in Bauru, São Paulo, in October and Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, in November. According to FUNAI, the seminars will help to consolidate and pool knowledge for projects that would otherwise remain isolated.
