The fines for punishing those who degrade the rainforest are now
as high as R$50 million, according to a new law signed by President
Fernando Henrique Cardoso. The law is aimed at those who illegally
cut trees in protected rainforests, or those who kill and/or capture
protected species of animals. The minimum fine is $R1000. Before
the law was signed, the maximum fine was $4,900.
