October 21, 2000

The Ministers of the Environment, José Sarney Filho, and of Justice, José Gregori, will attend the celebration of the first harvest of timber by the Kayapó-Xikrin Indians of Cateté, in the south of Pará, next Wednesday. The Indians' sustainable timber extraction project is the first in Brazil to follow the legal management requirements, and is in the process of certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The project, which took almost ten years of studies and investment to realise is expected to serve as a model for other Indian communities in the Amazon.
