The Minister of Defence, Geraldo Quintão, announced yesterday that the government intends to install four new outposts in the border regions of the Amazon in order to create new cities to help populate these remote areas. The four outposts will consist of 40-60 soldiers and teams from various government agencies, such as IBAMA, FUNAI, and the Ministry of Education. The operation is part of the North Channel Project, with which the military hopes to increase the military presence in remote regions of the Amazon. Quintão also signed an agreement yesterday with the Getúlio Vargas Foundation to conduct economic viability studies of cities in the northern border regions of Brazil.
