A consortium made up of several non-governmental organisations and the Buyers' Group of Certified Timber of Brazil will conduct a study into the domestic market for tropical timber, in order to find out the destinations of this resource, and encourage forest management certification. The study will begin in October, and will be conducted by the Institute for Man and the Environment of the Amazon (IMAZON), the Institute for Management and Certification of Forests and Agriculture (IMAFLORA), and Friends of the Earth. The study will focus on the 86% Amazonian timber that ends up in the domestic Brazilian market in order to analyse the entire chain of production and commercialisation, and find out who the major consumers of the timber are. This will lead to promotional campaigns to encourage the use of certified timber - timber extracted from lands using sustainable forest management.
