The Superior Court of Justice (STJ) ruled yesterday to maintain the 19-year sentences of the three gold prospectors convicted for the murder of twelve Yanomami Indians in August of 1993. The defendants had appealed to be tried by jury, but the STJ judged the crime to be genocide - a crime against humanity - and by the terms of the international convention governing crimes against humanity, the case could not be tried by jury.
