BRASILIA (Aug. 30 ) XINHUA - Brazil and the United States on Monday
signed a scientific-technical cooperation accord for the control of
forest fires in Brazil.
The document was signed by Marilia Marreco Cerqueria, president of the
Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources, and
Michael Dombebk, director of Forest Services of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
Under the accord, America will provide Brazil with 600,000 U.S.
dollars in aid, which will center on the region of Cerrado covering 25
percent of Brazil's territory.
From next September to 2003, the United States will provide an
airplane, equipped with instruments from the National Administration
of Space and Aeronautics (NASA), to help prevent forest fires and
observe changes in the tropical ecosystem in Cerrado.
