Yanomami leaders representing AYRCA (the Yanomami Association of the Cauburis River and Tributaries), presented a petition on the first day of the 5th General Assembly of FOIRN (the Federation of Indian Organisations of the Rio Negro) against the construction of a stretch of road, proposed by the Army, that would connect BR-307 to the village Maturacá. The army want to build the road because they have a platoon stationed adjacent to Maturacá, and they want to facilitate access. However, the Yanomami believe the road will bring unwanted visitors, such as gold prospectors and tourists, which would contribute to the deterioration of the Yanomami culture. The road is also estimated to be very expensive, particularly due to high maintenance costs. Error: Unable to read footer file.
