BRISTOL, April 29 (AFP) - Four mountaineers set out on a rescue mission
Wednesday to save a rare cabbage from advancing ranks of rhododendrons on the
small island of Lundy, south-west England.

The Lundy cabbage can only be found on this tiny five-kilometres (three miles)
long island off Bristol, and has been listed by international botanists as an
endangered species.

The four mountaineers will spend five days swinging down rocky cliff-faces and
scything away the prolific rhododendrons to save the cabbage from being stifled
by the flowering shrub.

The operation is financed in part by the World Wildlife Fund and carried out by
volunteers.
