Muara Teweh, C Kalimantan, Dec 21 (ANTARA) - The Forestry Ministry has allocated a 15,000-hectare forest area in North Barito district, Central Kalimantan province for the planting of 20,000 "meranti" tree seedlings.
"The government is planning to turn the area into a meranti seedling center," North Barito district head, H Badaruddin, said here Wednesday.
He said the project is the result of a feasibility study which he and 14 other district heads conducted in Sabah, Malaysia.
Badaruddin noted that Sabah has succeeded in preserving forests of white teakwood and acacia trees, as well as oil palm plantations.
The development of the meranti forest project is estimated to cost Rp 50 billion, he said, noting that the trees will be ready for harvest 20 to 25 years later.
