Jakarta -- Indonesia aims to supply more pulp and paper than North America or Scandinavia within 15 years, as the major producing regions face a possible decline in their production and exports because of a lack of new industrial forest estates, the Jakarta Post reported, citing Indonesia's Director- General of Agro-Industry and Forest Products, Gatot Ibnusantosa. Indonesia's share in the last decade of the world market has grown 65 percent for pulp and 31 percent for paper, compared to 3 percent growth in pulp and 2 percent in paper for both North America and Scandinavia, Ibnusantosa said. The directorate general predicted Indonesia's pulp production would increase to 3.7 million metric tons this year, from 2.9 million tons in 1999, and exports would rise to 1.5 million tons, from 1.1 million tons, the report said.

Indonesia is planning to shift logging concessions to state companies from private loggers in an attempt to prevent clear cutting forest. Error: Unable to read footer file.
