Four South Korean companies are to form a consortium to build a one-point-seven Billion dollar highway across the Indonesian province of Papua, formerly known as Irian Jaya.
The four companies have signed a memorandum of understanding on the project with the province's Vice Governor.
The memorandum says the consortium will build an 11,280-kilometre long highway.
Under the deal, the government will not contribute funds but will allow the consortium to sell wood felled to make way for the road. The consortium will also be compensated with plantation and forestry concesssions for a period yet to be decided.
