The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has discovered 2,770 types of rare orchids in rain forests in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, according to the Indonesian Observer Thursday.

The Flame of Irian (mucuna novaeguinea) is the most beautiful orchid, FAO researchers said in a report to the local Manokwari administration.

The report said the red orchid with black dots is abundant in the forests of Irian Jaya. Unfortunately, the rare orchid has at times been smuggled out of its habitat by foreign expatriates working in forest concession areas.

The most peculiar plant found by the researchers is the burning mushroom (mycena). Located in the remote Arfak Mountains, the mushroom glows at night.

The Arfak Mountains contain several unique species of flora and fauna, including butterflies and about 320 kinds of bird species.

FAO experts have been conducting research in Irian Jaya for the past five years. Also, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) also conducts research in Irian Jaya.
