THE Highlands Governors have resolved to explore the possibility of using gas from the Hides Gas project in the Southern Highlands province to supply electricity to the region to supplement electricity from the Yonki Hydro power station in Eastern Highlands province.

During their fourth meeting in Wabag last week, the governors said that Yonki supply was unreliable, and that continuous power disruptions over the years has had, and will continue in future to have an adverse effect on businesses and government operations in the area.

They resolved that they have a responsibility to explore for an alternative.

At present, the huge Porgera Gold Mine in Enga uses power generated from gas from Hides for its operations at the mine.

They agreed to write to the PNG Electricity Commission for further discussions on this proposal.
