High profile Australian actor Jack Thompson has joined the battle to protect old growth forests from woodchipping.

Mr Thompson visited Tasmania's Styx Valley yesterday, with Greens Senator Bob Brown.

He says he will not tell Australians how to vote in the federal election but is critical of the major parties' environment policies.

He describes the policies as bandaid measures.

"We're getting stuck into the forests and we're getting stuck into it harder and faster than ever and once it's gone, it won't be an issue," Mr Thompson said.

Mr Thompson is also urging a moratorium on woodchipping.

"It's an ongoing battle with those who would wish to convert our wilderness into some saleable product and it's irreplaceable," he said.

"Once it's gone, it won't be there ever again and to suggest it's sustainable is absolutely a lie." Error: Unable to read footer file.
