One of Australia's rarest mammals, the endangered long footed potoroo, has been found in old-growth forest at Brown Mountain in east Gippsland.
Logging is banned in forests known to contain the mammal, which feeds on fungi and requires dense undergrowth to survive.
East Gippsland conservationist Jill Redwood says the long footed potoroo is living in forest which has been earmarked for logging this year.
She says the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment has now been asked to hold off old growth logging in the area.
"With these coups planned for logging this season, we're hoping like hell the department sees sense and stops logging in this area and does surveys in there, some decent surveys instead of the lick and spit jobs that have been done before," Ms Redwood said.
