American Drought Worsened by Climate Change

Gee, do you think climate change might mean more extreme drought? How
many more studies are needed before we see the World is critically threatened
by the most rapid and severe climatic shifts ever? Bush needs to get his head
out of his a__ - oops, I mean out of the oil, no I guess the saying is out of the
sand.

Mountains and Watersheds

How much longer can we bulldoze mountains during coal strip-mining, dumping
the waste in watersheds, and expect to have a Planet that is habitable?

Roads and rainforests do not mix

Roads and rainforests do not mix. Perhaps the greatest ultimate cause of
Amazonian rainforest deforestation and diminishment is the construction of
roads that fragment previously intact large rainforest ecosystems. The roads
themselves cause damage and fragment habitats, but most importantly they
facilitate so many follow on activites. A new report found that strict protection
of forests adjacent to roadline
may limit illegal logging and other invasions. If
a road must be built, it should not necessarily doom the entire region to
biological decimation.

Russia Wavers on Kyoto

Russia Delays Global Warming Pact, May Wreck Deal

In a major climate change policy development, Russia's commitment to Kyoto
appears to be in doubt
. This may be brinksmanship in order to exact the best
possible deal for its forest carbon sinks. Nonetheless, it is time for our
respective conservation networks to gear up and lobby Russia to ratify Kyoto.
Expect an action alert within the day.

Bush Announces Ecological Plunder of the West

US Govt. to Release Oil Estimates in West

The wild, wild west is going to be drilled and otherwise ripped apart for the
benefit of President Bush's oil oligarchy pals. I know addiction. I have been there...

...and know what it looks and feels like. America is in the grips of an oil
addiction that threatens the Planet. Climate change, rainforest loss, childhood
asthma, terrorism, resource imperialism, air pollution - they are largely the
same problem. Planetary survival depends upon breaking our oil dependence
and embarking upon the era of ecological restoration and renewable energy.
