ALERT: Save Bialowieza Forest, Europe's Last Primeval Temperate Forest
TAKE ACTION: Ask the Polish government to stop exploitation of the ancient Bialowieza forest, preserve the whole complex as a national park, and end permanently extensive logging that threatens Europe's last remnant old-growth northern temperate forests.Situated on the Polish/Belarussian border, the Bialowieza Forest [search] is a priceless relic of lowland European forests, a place where the last fragments of primeval temperate old-growth forest on the Central European lowland have survived. It is home to many species extinct elsewhere including the European Bison, the largest terrestrial mammal of Europe; and also contains lynx, wolves and other threatened wildlife and plants. Yet approximately 90% of the forest remains unprotected...
For many years environmental NGOs, scientists, concerned citizens in Poland and abroad have asked successive Polish governments to protect the forest, asking them to ban cutting of old growth and for enlargement of the Bialowieza National Park to protect the whole forest complex. Until now there has been little success. After the autumn elections Poland has a new government, so we are trying anew.TAKE ACTION

Youshould also put pressure on the European Union....and on environmental NGOs in Europe!

Aloha Glen
Saving Forests from raging consumers?!
am glad your trying to save the forest in Poland &
elsewhere.
I'm working on saving the forests in Oregon from
Bushite U$FS allowing logging butchers clear-cutting
NW forests for reading & photo, office, cleaning,
packaging & toilet (dioxin poison bleached) PAPER,
cardboard, & wood products for 1000 uneeded building
lumber, furniture, posts, poles, pallets, 4x8, & even
ethanol, rayon & fuel from wood chips. Even worse is
clear cutting forests for farming & cattle- grazing,
suburbs, roads, factories, etc!
Unfortunately we ain't gonna really reverse mass
deforesting for those consuming (unaware suicidal
needs)' trends until our greedy demands for those
products is reduced into conserving our forest
wilderness now for future generations of habitat
preserving & even restoring trashed forests. 90% of
cityzens don't know or care about massive deforesting,
even from direct experience within the forests enuf to
slow-down pandemic wasting forest products & polluting
with wood waste. They haven't studies forest ecology
to learn how it works together with weather & animals,
fertility, etc, in the seasons cycles. Even seeing the
destroyed clear-cuts don't stir enuf curiosity,
empathy & guilt from needing, buying & wasting vast
forests of trees over last 1000 years of empire
deforesting wilderness, causing culture crashes, drout
& war for more resources in history, like now in Iraq!
The cause-effects connection between deforesting &
climate crisis is obvious to us field ecologists,
forest dwellers & Permaculture folks who study natures
cycles of codependent & cooperating energy balancing
in bioregions within watershed & mysterious
whole-earth biosphere. That natural complexity
confuses civilized people safely protected indoors
from 'bad weather' news reports. But big climate
science computer models are usually wild guesses at
predicting climate cycles & trends of chaos trying to
warn folks of coming dangers!. They're so inaccurate
most folks don't realy believe in looming distaster
forecasts, especially about mass deforesting
co-creating global heating, erosion, drouts,
pestilence, wildfires, landslides, etc. How many
functions of our diverse forests from tropics to
arctic in wonderfully diverse complexity all
cooperating together do climate science or ecologists
know? 5-10% = the amount of normal human brain & DNA
that educated people use??? 90% numb from schools,
mass-media, junk- foods, drugs, polluton & fears of
100 things.
These disturbing trends are slowly regionally
reversing with our "Blessed Unrest" - Paul Hawken, '07
describing how a billion people on earth now in
million local volunteer groups cooperating together in
community action projects on 1000 frontiers. We-re
working needing awareness, meeting, sharing, agreeing,
organizing, protecting, harvesting, eating,
networking, protesting & growing organic health in
their bioregion homelands. See Paul's
'Wiserearth'.org on internet. I just read & reviewed
his BU book is brilliant expo-ing earth lovers
efforts, needs, problems & solutions we're working for
in our bioregions & unreported by ma$$ media.
