{"id":1141,"date":"2011-05-18T15:21:12","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T19:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.goodforforests.com\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2023-03-23T17:32:50","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T21:32:50","slug":"a-look-at-the-bigger-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forests.org\/fr\/a-look-at-the-bigger-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"A Look at the Bigger Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:104% !important;max-width:104% !important;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_3_4 3_4 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:75%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:2.56%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:2.56%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Every year when we release our <a href=\"https:\/\/forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SFI_ProgressReport2011_FINAL_singlepage.pdf\">Progress Report<\/a>, I am amazed at how much the SFI program and its many partners have achieved.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the highlights from this year\u2019s report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5,584 resource and logging professionals trained in 2010;<\/li>\n<li>$81.4 million invested by program participants in forest research activities in 2010;<\/li>\n<li>948 SFI Implementation Committee members;<\/li>\n<li>36% increase in chain-of-custody certified locations from the start of 2010 to April 2011;<\/li>\n<li>SFI commitment of $1.1 million through its <a href=\"https:\/\/forests.org\/conservationgrants\/\">Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant Program<\/a> in 2010 and 2011 \u2013 a total value of $4.2 million once partner contributions are included;<\/li>\n<li>more than five million acres\/two million hectares of lands held or managed by Aboriginal communities certified to the SFI 2010-2014 Standard;<\/li>\n<li>new SFI <a href=\"https:\/\/forests.org\/labelsandclaims\/\">on-product labels<\/a> to strengthen transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s obvious why the title of our Progress Report is <em>The Bigger Picture: Conservation. Community. Integrity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload size-medium wp-image-1142 alignleft\" style=\"border: 3px solid black; margin: 13px;\" title=\"pr-bigger picture screenshot_small\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27230%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20230%20300%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27230%27%20height%3D%27300%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/pr-bigger-picture-screenshot_small-230x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"pr-bigger picture screenshot_small\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For SFI Inc., a rigorous certification standard is a starting point \u2013 it anchors an independent program broader than any other third-party forest certification program in North America; one that supports conservation research, reaches out to communities, and is built on integrity.<\/p>\n<p>SFI Inc. Board Chair Bob Luoto put it well in his message: \u201c. . . what impresses me most about the program is the fact that literally thousands of people across North America are putting it to work . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We invited <a href=\"https:\/\/forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Certification-bodies_February-2020.pdf\">certification bodies<\/a> who conduct the detailed third-party audits to the SFI standard to submit comments. Mike Ferruci of NSF-ISAR Forestry Program spoke to the SFI program rigor: \u201cMy advice for companies that want to be SFI certified is to make sure everything is in order before I arrive. I have no choice \u2013 if the SFI standard requirements are not being met, and I see a major non-conformance, I won\u2019t be issuing an SFI certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SFI stands with other certification programs as a respected, internationally recognized standard. It also stands alone. It is the only program in North America requiring that program participants support and engage in research activities, that they broaden the practice of sustainable forestry through landowner and public outreach. It stands alone as the only program with a grassroots network of SFI Implementation Committees who train loggers and participate in important community events.<\/p>\n<p>Conservation. Integrity. Community.
