WASHINGTON \u2013 The independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative\u00ae (SFI\u00ae) program \u2013 one of\u00a0the world\u2019s leading third-party forest certification programs \u2013 continues to grow exponentially,\u00a0recently achieving 2,000 chain-of-custody certified locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe SFI program is experiencing astounding growth \u2013 companies and buyers alike clearly\u00a0appreciate our ability to strengthen forest management across North America and avoid\u00a0unwanted offshore sources,\u201d SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow said today. \u201cAt the start of\u00a02007, we had 48 certified locations. Two years later, this had climbed to more than 1,000, and\u00a0now there are more than 2,000. We have gone from approving five label use requests a year to\u00a0more than five a day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wide range of services, goods and locations means buyers can find SFI-labeled products to\u00a0meet any need \u2013 whether it is furniture, lumber for their home, or paper for their office. A wide\u00a0selection of popular products \u2013 from cosmetics to food to shoes \u2013 come in SFI-labeled\u00a0packaging. There are even compostable paper cups made with fiber from forests certified to the\u00a0SFI Standard.<\/p>\n

By using the SFI label, companies can demonstrate they are doing their part to reward\u00a0responsible forestry. The SFI forest standard is based on 14 core principles that promote\u00a0sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity,\u00a0wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.<\/p>\n

Organizations certified to the SFI program range from small printers and lumberyards to\u00a0international entities with more than 100 locations. They include 579 printers, as well as\u00a0publishers, distributors, home building centers, mills, paper merchants, packaging companies,\u00a0wholesale lumber companies, and more. They are found in every corner of the United States\u00a0and Canada, as well as in Italy, Mexico, France, China, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the United\u00a0Kingdom, Colombia, El Salvador and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

The non-profit SFI is a comprehensive, independent certification program that works with\u00a0environmental, social and industry partners to promote responsible forest management in North\u00a0America and responsible fiber sourcing worldwide. Close to 196 million acres\/80 million\u00a0hectares are certified to the SFI forest management standard in North America \u2013 making it the\u00a0largest single standard in the world.<\/p>\n

Through SFI chain-of-custody certification, companies must have a tracking system in place so\u00a0they can tell buyers how much certified, responsibly sourced and\/or recycled content is in a\u00a0product. The SFI program also has unique fiber sourcing requirements that promoteresponsible forest management on all suppliers\u2019 lands in North America.<\/p>\n

The SFI label is recognized by respected organizations across North America and globally,\u00a0including the American Consumer Council and TerraChoice Environmental Marketing, which\u00a0says in its 2009 Seven Sins of Greenwashing report that SFI is a credible eco-label because the\u00a0SFI program meets three key criteria \u2013 third-party certified, publicly available standard, and\u00a0transparent standard development process.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
