{"id":18484,"date":"2010-09-22T19:50:12","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T19:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/162.217.168.59\/?p=18484"},"modified":"2023-03-22T17:04:06","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T21:04:06","slug":"alabamacommittee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forests.org\/fr\/alabamacommittee\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Committee Wins SFI Achievement Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:104% !important;max-width:104% !important;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_3_4 3_4 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:75%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:2.56%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:2.56%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p><strong>VANCOUVER, British Columbia<\/strong> \u2013 Alabama won the 12th annual Sustainable Forestry\u00a0Initiative\u00ae (SFI\u00ae) Implementation Committee achievement award for innovative activities\u00a0that strengthen forest practices and raise awareness about the benefits of using wood from\u00a0responsible sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlabama has shown why SFI Implementation Committees are such an important part of\u00a0the SFI program through accomplishments such as its qualified logging professional\u00a0training and outreach to landowners, legislators and educators,\u201d SFI President and CEO\u00a0Kathy Abusow said when presenting the award at the 2010 SFI Annual Conference. \u201cThese\u00a0grassroots partnerships are unique to the SFI program and help us address local needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Alabama committee is made up of a diverse group of people who share a common\u00a0goal \u2013 to promote responsible forest management in Alabama,\u201d said committee chair Mike\u00a0Griggs. \u201cWe work hard to support our communities through landowner outreach and\u00a0logger training, and by increasing forest certification across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama SFI Implementation Committee was recognized for activities that include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an information session and wood design competition so architecture students at\u00a0Auburn University appreciate the value of wood for green construction;<\/li>\n<li>qualified logging professional training \u2013 89 individuals completed the initial twoday\u00a0training program in 2009, and more than 1,900 have completed the initial\u00a0training and maintain their designation with six hours of professional development\u00a0annually;<\/li>\n<li>preparation and distribution to landowners of a Guide to Sustainable Forests;<\/li>\n<li>participation in an SFI exhibit at the Southeast Building Conference with the\u00a0Florida SFI Implementation Committee, and sponsorship of videos on endangered\u00a0species and non-native invasive species developed by the North Carolina Forestry\u00a0Association; and<\/li>\n<li>a commitment to double the area certified to the American Tree Farm System in\u00a0Alabama so family forest owners can help to meet growing market demand for\u00a0certified fiber.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cImplementation of best management practices in Alabama stands at 97 percent \u2013 thanks in\u00a0large part to the training and outreach led by the Alabama SFI Implementation Committee,\u201d\u00a0said Alabama State Forester Linda S. Casey. \u201cA recent review by the Southern Group of\u00a0State Foresters Water Resources Committee found Alabama has a level of commitment to\u00a0its BMP program that serves as an example for other states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SFI program has 37 SFI Implementation Committees at the state, provincial or regional\u00a0level to support local programs. They involve private landowners, independent loggers,\u00a0forestry professionals, local government agencies, academics, scientists and\u00a0conservationists. Members of the Alabama committee, which also won the achievement\u00a0award in 2002, include SFI program participants, the School of Forestry and Wildlife\u00a0Sciences at Auburn University and The Nature Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSFI Implementation Committees are at the heart of the SFI program, and Alabama is no\u00a0exception,\u201d said Dr. Richard W. (Dick) Brinker, dean and professor in the School of\u00a0Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University and a member of the SFI board of\u00a0directors. \u201cThrough training and outreach activities, it is helping forest professionals and\u00a0landowners improve practices on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SFI Implementation Committees promote the SFI forest standard as a means to broaden the\u00a0practice of responsible forestry and achieve on-the-ground progress.
