Through the involvement of partners, the total value of the nine projects\u00a0announced today will be close to $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Dick Brinker, Dean Emeritus at Auburn University\u2019s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and a member of the\u00a0SFI Board of Directors, said the education projects are important for the future of North America\u2019s forests. \u201cWe\u00a0need to actively reconnect our youth to the forest and outdoors if we want to conserve forests now and in the\u00a0future,\u201d he said. \u201cBy supporting these projects, SFI and its partners are creating the responsible citizens and future\u00a0resource professionals we will need to keep our forests strong and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SFI-funded community projects announced today include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Chattahoochee Chapter Society of American Foresters<\/strong>\u00a0 will invite Boy and Girl Scouts in the\u00a0Metropolitan Atlanta area to its Walk in the Forest Field Day where they can learn about the forestry profession\u00a0and benefits of sustainable forestry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Evans Lake Forest Education Society<\/strong>\u00a0will host a Forest Education Symposium for educators at its\u00a0center in Squamish, British Columbia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Forest Foundation<\/strong> will arrange field trips for high school students and teachers in California to help\u00a0them learn about sustainable forest management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Hardwood Forestry Fund<\/strong> will plant 23,000 hardwood seedlings on idle agricultural land in Wisconsin to\u00a0maintain ecological and economic success of the forest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lauderale County Habitat for Humanity<\/strong> will sponsor a Habitat home using SFI-certified products and\u00a0certified to the ANSI National Green Building Standard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Mississippi SFI Implementation Committee<\/strong>\u00a0 will sponsor incentives for team competition in National\u00a0FFA Association and 4-H forestry contests to promote awareness of sustainable forestry among students and\u00a0their leaders, educators and advisors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The National 4-H Forestry Invitational<\/strong> will show youth how forests grow, the role forests play in their own\u00a0lives, and how forests are managed to provide multiple benefits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Housing Endowment<\/strong> will receive funding to cover certification fees for 25 Habitat for Humanity\u00a0homes to be green certified to the ANSI National Green Building Standard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Northwest Natural Resources Institute<\/strong> will show teachers how forest professionals manage lands as\u00a0part of its annual Natural Resources Teacher Workshop in Washington State.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SFI Inc. created the Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant program in 2010 to build upon the more than\u00a0$1.2 billion SFI program participants have contributed since 1995 for research activities, including forestry\u00a0research, science and technology.
