VANCOUVER, British Columbia<\/strong> \u2013 Thanks to a conservation grant from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative\u00ae\u00a0(SFI\u00ae), the South Coast Conservation Program, in partnership with International Forest Products Ltd.\u00a0(Interfor), has created a new on-line tool featuring 95 fact sheets on species of conservation concern for\u00a0the Coastal Region of British Columbia. With contributions from a number of well-known species-at-risk\u00a0specialists, this resource will help land managers identify and protect species-at-risk on British Columbia\u2019s\u00a0Pacific Coast.<\/p>\n

Other project partners include SFI program participants Capacity Forest Management Ltd., which\u00a0manages SFI-certified forest tenures held by coastal First Nations, as well as the British Columbia Ministry\u00a0of Environment. The South Coast Conservation Program works with a variety of partners to identify and\u00a0implement conservation actions that maintain and restore species and ecosystems in need of\u00a0conservation on British Columbia\u2019s south coast.<\/p>\n

The independent SFI forest certification program awarded the South Coast Conservation Program\u00a0$60,000 through its Conservation and Community Partnerships Grants Program to update and expand on\u00a0an existing field guide on forest-dependent plant and animal species at-risk for the Coast Region. This\u00a0area of British Columbia\u2019s coast includes 40.7 million acres\/16.5 million hectares of forest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe completion of this project represents a significant step toward ensuring those who work in\u00a0conservation and forest management in British Columbia are able to keep up with important\u00a0developments in species protection,\u201d Tamsin Baker of the South Coast Conservation Program said today.\u00a0\u201cThis tool would not have been possible without the support of SFI and our partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dThe fact sheets will help us identify and address environmental priorities and meet SFI\u2019s rigorous\u00a0requirements for species at risk,\u201d said Corby Lamb, president of Capacity Forest Management. \u201cOur First\u00a0Nation licensees can use the information not only for planning and fieldwork, but also to support higher\u00a0level land use planning decisions on their lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The factsheets\u00a0provide photos for field\u00a0identification and current conservation status of forest-dependent species such as the Pacific water\u00a0shrew, western screech owl and marbled murrelet. Each species profile contains the most up-to-date\u00a0science on conservation issues from as many open-access sources as possible. The South Coast\u00a0Conservation Program also prepared a training package and held two workshops for land use and\u00a0resource professionals.<\/p>\n

British Columbia is a world leader with more than 50 million hectares\/123.5 million acres of third-partycertified forest lands, more than one third of them certified to the SFI program. The SFI program\u00a0manages the largest single forest certification standard in the world \u2013 and more than a quarter of SFI\u00a0forest certifications are in British Columbia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an excellent resource for professionals working in the field now, for students who will go on tomanage British Columbia\u2019s forests, and for any organization or individual who wants to support\u00a0conservation efforts,\u201d said Dr. John Innes, Dean of Forestry at the University of British Columbia. \u201cIt will\u00a0lead to more informed discussions and more effective decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

SFI Inc. introduced its Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant Program last year and committed\u00a0$675,000 to support nine projects \u2013 $307,500 for 2010 alone. Earlier this month, it opened a request for\u00a0proposals for up to $200,000 in grants for 2011. SFI is the only forest certification standard in North\u00a0America with research requirements to improve forestry, forest health, productivity and sustainable\u00a0management of forest resources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
