WASHINGTON, DC<\/strong> \u2013 Today, over 600,000 acres of timberland managed by Timberland Investment\u00a0Resources, LLC (TIR) have been certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standard. TIR\u2019s\u00a0investment footprint spans 14 states, with a significant presence in the southeastern U.S. Their\u00a0certification builds on the SFI Forest Partners\u00ae Program\u2019s previous successes in South Carolina and\u00a0Florida, as well as the ongoing work with a wide range of medium-sized private and public landowners,\u00a0and manufacturing facilities. These certified lands, in addition to the over 500,000 acres recently\u00a0announced by the St. Joe Company, put the SFI Forest Partners Program well on the road to achieving its\u00a02014 milestone of certifying 5 million acres of forestland to the SFI standard.<\/p>\n

In 2012, four market leaders \u2013 Time Inc., the National Geographic Society, Macmillan Publishers,\u00a0Pearson \u2013 stepped forward and became SFI Founding Forest Partners, investing in the future of our\u00a0forests by making five-year commitments to increase the amount of forestland and the number of small\u00a0mills certified to the SFI standards beginning in the U.S. South. Through the financial and in-kind support\u00a0to assist with consulting services, workshops and coordination, the Program \u2013 which is also supported by\u00a0Hearst Enterprises \u2013 works to involve more landowners, manufacturers, distributors, customers,\u00a0conservation groups and government agencies across the supply-chain with the goal of certifying five\u00a0million acres of forests to the SFI standard by the end of 2014 and ten million acres by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n

In addition to our\u00a0scientifically-based forest practices we participate in other initiatives that reflect society\u2019s interest in the\u00a0environmental, cultural, historical, aesthetic and broadly encompassing economic values of private\u00a0forests,\u201d said Tom Johnson, Managing Director of Client Relations with TIR. \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to be able to\u00a0contribute over 600,000 acres to the SFI Forest Partners Program goal of reaching 5 million acres by the\u00a0end of 2014.\u201d<\/p>\n
