WASHINGTON, DC<\/strong> \u2013 In an agreement of support between the two organizations, the Sustainable Forestry\u00a0Initiative\u00ae (SFI\u00ae) Inc., and Habitat for Humanity International have signed an MOU and pledged to expand\u00a0the cooperation between the two groups by encouraging the use of wood products certified to the SFI\u00a0Standard on Habitat construction sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cSFI and Habitat for Humanity International share common values: an equally strong commitment to\u00a0communities of North America and the sourcing of certified building materials from responsibly managed\u00a0forests,\u201d said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc. \u201cI look forward to working together to build a\u00a0better future for our forests and our communities for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

SFI and many of its program participants have sponsored Habitat builds by supplying building materials\u00a0certified to the SFI Standard to Habitat affiliates in the U.S. and Canada. SFI has also worked with the\u00a0National Association of Home Builders and Built Green Canada to support green building certification of\u00a0Habitat homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHabitat for Humanity supports environmentally responsible construction of durable, healthy and\u00a0sustainable homes,\u201d said Larry Gluth, Senior Vice President, U.S. and Canada, Habitat for Humanity\u00a0International. \u201cAs part of Habitat\u2019s efforts to enhance the environmental footprint of each Habitat home,\u00a0we are pleased to partner with SFI to encourage Habitat affiliates\u2019 use of wood products from organizations\u00a0certified to the SFI Standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are many green building rating systems that recognize the value of multiple forest certification\u00a0standards and offer credits for products certified to these forest certification standards. Green building\u00a0rating tools like the ANSI\/ICC 700-2012: National Green Building Standard and Built Green Canada\u00a0recognize wood certified to the SFI standard. SFI works with those organizations that support multiple\u00a0forest certification standards including SFI.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
