WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/strong> \u2014 The Sustainable Forestry Initiative\u00ae Inc. (SFI) has strengthened its capacity to\u00a0conserve North America\u2019s forests with the election of three new members to its Board of Directors:\u00a0Robert Abernethy, Craig Armstrong, and Gail Wallin.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir respective experience in the environmental and private sectors will be an important asset. We are\u00a0so pleased to welcome Robert, Craig, and Gail to the SFI Board. Given their tremendous expertise, they\u00a0will help SFI further enhance the vital link between healthy forests, responsible purchasing, and\u00a0sustainable communities,\u201d said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc.<\/p>\n

SFI\u2019s 18-member, multi-stakeholder Board<\/a> of Directors comprises three chambers, representing\u00a0environmental, economic and social interests equally. The SFI Board\u2019s diversity and independence allows\u00a0it to play a meaningful role at the intersection of sustainable forests and thriving communities.<\/p>\n


Robert Abernethy, President, Longleaf Alliance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Robert will serve on the SFI Board\u2019s environmental chamber. Highly regarded for his decades of\u00a0involvement with a range of wildlife and land management issues, Robert became President of the\u00a0Longleaf Alliance in 2012. Prior to that he held a senior position with the National Wild Turkey Federation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mission of the Longleaf Alliance is to ensure a sustainable future for the longleaf pine ecosystem in\u00a0the U.S. South, through partnerships, landowner assistance and science-based education and outreach.\u00a0I\u2019m looking forward to helping SFI influence the discussion about how large private lands are engaged in\u00a0forest health and conservation,\u201d said Abernethy.<\/p>\n


Craig Armstrong, President and CEO, Millar Western<\/strong><\/p>\n

Craig will serve on the SFI Board\u2019s economic chamber. Craig is a respected forest sector executive with\u00a0more than 35 years of experience, including senior executive, operating and marketing positions. Millar\u00a0Western is an innovative manufacturer of high-quality lumber and pulp for builders and papermakers\u00a0around the world. Millar Western uses timber harvested from forests sustainably managed to SFI\u00a0standards. Craig also currently serves as the Chair of the Alberta Forest Products Association.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a strong interest in linking sustainable forestry practices with responsible market choices that can\u00a0have a positive impact on forests and communities. Serving on the SFI Board is a great opportunity to\u00a0explore market-based approaches to improving environmental, economic and social outcomes,\u201d said\u00a0Armstrong.<\/p>\n


Gail Wallin, Co-Chair of the Canadian Council on Invasive Species; Executive Director,<\/strong>
Invasive Species Council of British Columbia, Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gail will serve on the SFI Board\u2019s environmental chamber. Gail\u2019s deep experience in sustainable\u00a0development goes back to the mid-1990s. She works closely with the forest sector and others as an\u00a0educator and facilitator to help ensure industry is equipped and able to demonstrate leadership. Over the\u00a0past decade, Gail has been recognized in Canada for her leadership and work on strategic initiatives\u00a0aimed at reducing the introduction and spread of invasive species.<\/p>\n

\u201cSFI is a good fit for my focus on achieving joint solutions on complex resource management issues. My\u00a0fellow board members have a wealth of experience in land-use planning processes and engaging local\u00a0communities. Together we should be able to achieve substantial progress,\u201d said Wallin.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
