Washington, D.C.<\/strong> \u2014 The Muckleshoot Tribe\u2019s ancestors inhabited Central Puget Sound for thousands of\u00a0years. Today, this coastal Salish Tribe is a major contributor to the local economy and community,\u00a0providing resources to governments, schools, nonprofits, and churches throughout Washington State.<\/p>\n

The Tribe\u2019s decision to certify its Tomanamus Forest to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Forest\u00a0Management Standard is the latest example of its commitment to sustainability and responsible forestry\u00a0practices. From landmark agreements protecting fish and wildlife habitat, to innovative educational\u00a0programming, and hundreds of partnerships with organizations serving those in need throughout the\u00a0state, the Muckleshoot Tribe is contributing to the health of its forests and the quality of life of its citizens\u00a0and neighbors.<\/p>\n

The Tribe intends to manage the property for the primary purpose of long term sustainable timber harvest,\u00a0while preserving natural values including fish and wildlife habitat, plant resources, and areas of cultural\u00a0importance. Ownership of the property will diversify the Tribe’s economic base and insure Muckleshoot\u00a0tribal members permanent access for hunting, gathering, and other traditional uses. This working forest\u00a0will provide jobs and revenue for important tribal government programs now and for future generations.”\u00a0“The White River Forest is an important part of the tribe’s homeland,” said Muckleshoot Tribal Council\u00a0Chair Virginia Cross. “Bringing this property into tribal ownership is the realization of a long-held goal of\u00a0our people.”<\/p>\n

Forestland certified to SFI Standards with Tribal and Aboriginal partners covers millions of acres in several\u00a0different jurisdictions. Twenty-one Tribal and Aboriginal communities and businesses in Canada and the\u00a0U.S. work to maintain SFI certification on these lands.<\/p>\n

SFI is\u00a0proud to be considered a partner and I am so pleased that my fellow Salish people have chosen to certify\u00a0to the SFI Standard,\u201d said David Walkem, Chief of B.C.\u2019s Cooks Ferry Indian Band and an SFI board\u00a0member.<\/p>\n

Hancock Forest Management manages the property for the Tribe under the guidance of the Tribal\u00a0Council. “Hancock Forest management is honored to have been entrusted with management\u00a0responsibilities of the Tomanamus Forest by the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe,” said Robert Bass, Regional\u00a0Manager for Hancock Forest Management.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
