WASHINGTON, DC<\/strong> \u2014 The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF)\u00a0presented the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) with its Land\u00a0Stewardship Award during the 40th annual NWTF National Convention\u00a0and Sport Show in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday. SFI was chosen\u00a0for its commitment to conservation, promoting responsible forest\u00a0management for the benefit of the nation\u2019s forests and wildlife, and for\u00a0partnering to support the NWTF\u2019s important work.<\/p>\n

The NWTF created the Land Stewardship Award in 1994 to recognize\u00a0organizations for excellence in land management, partnerships, and\u00a0NWTF project support. The award also recognizes those who have done\u00a0outstanding work to benefit natural resources through land stewardship.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an absolute pleasure to receive the NWTF Land Stewardship\u00a0Award. SFI, and the natural resource managers that use the SFIvStandards, understand the importance of partnering to achieve our\u00a0shared goals of habitat management and conservation. In fact, this\u00a0award really goes to these managers who practice responsible forest\u00a0management across the more than 280 million acres\/110 million\u00a0hectares of forestland certified to the SFI Forest Management\u00a0Standard,\u201d said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc.<\/p>\n

NWTF is a natural partner for SFI because of their tremendous track record of conservation achievements. In\u00a0the eyes of many, restoration of the wild turkey population, led by the NWTF, is one of the greatest\u00a0conservation success stories in the history of North American wildlife. From a low 1.5 million birds in 1973,\u00a0today there are more than 7 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were pleased to present SFI this award at our 40th annual convention. Our future looks bright and I\u2019m\u00a0confident that our partnership with SFI will advance our shared interest in conserving forests and wildlife\u00a0habitat. We are working hard together to build this partnership. It will make a real difference for our current\u00a0members and for generations to come,\u201d said George Thornton, CEO of NWTF.<\/p>\n

One of the ways SFI and NWTF are helping each other achieve mutually beneficial goals is the NWTF\u2019s work\u00a0to promote the SFI Forest Partners\u00ae\u00a0 Program, which aims to increase certification, and connect the benefits\u00a0of responsible forest management to stakeholders throughout the supply chain. This enhances sustainability\u00a0and in turn enables current and future generations to enjoy America\u2019s forests for years to come. SFI and the\u00a0NWTF also share a focus on promoting youth education in conservation through Boy Scouts of America and\u00a0other leading outdoor youth education programs.<\/p>\n

SFI is also pleased that the NWTF will use SFI-labeled materials for NWTF Turkey Transport Boxes and for\u00a0NWTF publications such as Turkey Country\u00a0 and JAKES Country\u00a0 magazines. SFI on-product labels are\u00a0recognized globally and provide a visual cue to help customers source products from responsibly managed\u00a0forests.<\/p>\n

\u201cSetting a positive example for the use of sustainably produced materials is yet another example of the\u00a0NWTF\u2019s commitment to conservation in the broadest sense.
