Prior to joining SFI, Bettina served as Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry for the Commonwealth of Virginia and as Virginia\u2019s State Forester. Bettina was the first woman appointed to both positions. Today, she\u2019s proud to contribute to the growing representation of women leading conversations about sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>In this video, Bettina shares the importance of recognizing the many contributions of women in forestry, this International Women\u2019s Day, and every day.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-bottom:30px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:360px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:60%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s7iIGxZZ3u0?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-bottom:25px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\" style=\"--awb-text-transform:none;\"><h5>Changing the face of forestry<\/h5>\n<p>As a woman-led organization with many women leaders throughout the organization, we would like to recognize some of the many accomplishments the women at SFI have achieved in their sector and communities the last year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathy Abusow<\/strong>, President and CEO of SFI, serves the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/campaign\/2-billion-trees\/nature-based-climate-solutions-advisory-committee.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Based Climate Solutions Advisory Committee<\/a> (part of Canada\u2019s 2 Billion Trees Commitment), helping provide advice to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). She was asked to join the committee in 2021, following the success and <a href=\"https:\/\/pltcanada.org\/en\/funding-for-internships-in-the-forest-and-conservation-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional funding<\/a> of Project Learning Tree Canada\u2019s work to help young Canadians gain the skills and experience needed to succeed in a green career pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Under Kathy\u2019s leadership, <a href=\"https:\/\/pltcanada.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Learning Tree Canada<\/a> was founded in 2017. A key priority for PLT Canada is to develop a diverse and resilient workforce for the forest and conservation sector. Since 2018, PLT Canada, has placed young adults into more than 5,000 Green Jobs. Notably, the PLT Canada team was able to achieve gender balance in the placements.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy\u2019s commitment to gender equality is also embodied in the number of women in leadership roles and her support for SFI\u2019s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) working group. Kathy is also focused on elevating the role of women in the forest sector through support of important initiatives such at the Women\u2019s Forest Congress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nadine Block<\/strong>, Senior VP of SFI\u2019s Community and Government Relations, leads in her community by volunteering with a local Scout troop to help youth earn badges related to forestry, sustainability, and citizenship in society. She also co-leads a Women\u2019s Forest Congress sub-team focused on \u201cWorkforce Opportunities for Increasing Recruitment, Retention and Advancement\u201d and chairs the National Nominating Committee of the Society of American Foresters, helping identify and certify SAF\u2019s elected leaders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shuya Huang<\/strong>, Coordinator of Education Systems at SFI, was recently elected to the Board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cc-iucn.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature<\/a> (CCIUN). Since early 2021, Shuya has been volunteering on the CCIUCN Young Professionals Committee and has recently taken on this important role to continue to stress the importance of including youth voices. SFI and PLT Canada are both members of the CCIUCN.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaclyn Stallard<\/strong>, Director of Curriculum, was responsible for the development of PLT\u2019s new flagship curriculum, the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.plt.org\/Shop\/ProductDetails\/k8guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plt.org\/news\/awards-for-explore-your-environment-k-8-activity-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent winner of multiple awards<\/a> for both exceptional design and content. Outside of work, Jaclyn volunteers for Blue Star Families, helps raise money for wounded warriors, and is a community artist who recently co-created a one-of-a-kind giant cherry blossom sculpture as part of the &#8220;Art in Bloom&#8221; celebration of the Washington, D.C. National Cherry Blossom Festival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danika Strecko<\/strong>, Senior Manager of Education at SFI, was elected for a two-year term to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eecom.org\/\">Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication<\/a>\u2019s (EECOM) Board of Directors. EECOM is Canada\u2019s only national, bilingual, charitable network for environmental learning. Danicka looks forward to supporting their work to strategically and collaboratively advance environmental literacy, engage in environmental stewardship, and contribute to a healthy and sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p>SFI believes anyone can lead, and today we are reaffirming our commitment to elevating the role of women when it comes to the critical work, we are doing to ensure the sustainability
