CITY OF SURREY
Suitability Analysis for the City of Surrey
SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard Application
Developing a Roadmap for the City of Surrey to Certify to the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard
Why this Project Matters
The City of Surrey, British Columbia, is the largest city by land area and second-most populated in Metro Vancouver. It is one of the fastest growing, culturally diverse cities in Canada. The City’s motto: “The future lives here,” speaks to Surrey’s commitment to remain at the forefront of urban and community planning. The new SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard has the potential to enhance Surrey’s ability to live up to its reputation as an urban leader.
How This Project Will Help Surrey Build a Sustainable City of the Future
The City of Surrey is committed to developing a community that balances a high-quality living environment with a diverse, vibrant, and sustainable local economy. The City of Surrey’s values guide the way it serves and engages with communities, and how its residents work with each other. For example, Surrey’s EnergyShift program is engaging the public to help create a strategy for how Surrey can reduce its carbon footprint. The goal is to enhance land use and development plans, reduce solid waste, encourage walking, cycling and transit, develop sustainable new buildings, and create viable energy infrastructure. The SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard complements many of these goals by focusing on indicators like human health and well-being and climate smart management.
SFI’s Contribution
The SFI Community Grant Program is supporting a review of relevant City of Surrey plans, strategies, policies, and bylaws to identify programing gaps with performance measures and indicators in the new SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard.
