WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) recognizes Amazon’s DII5 facility in Elkhart, Indiana—completed at the end of 2025—as a leading example of how mass timber certified to be responsibly sourced and innovative design can help transform the building sector.
It’s incredibly exciting to see mass timber made with SFI-certified fiber used in Amazon’s DII5 building,” said Annie Perkins, Senior Director of Green Building and Supply Chain at SFI. “It shows how SFI certification can help assure responsible forest practices for the built environment—connecting forests to the places where people live and work.”
Mass timber buildings like DII5 also offer opportunities to connect people to the forests where the wood is sourced from. The walls and roof are comprised of a half a million board feet of SFI-certified cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, procured from Sterling Structural, an SFI-certified manufacturer based in the Midwest. Southern Yellow Pine wood certified to the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard used in the CLT and glulam beams were then manufactured, transported, and installed within 100 miles of the DII5 facility. This project combines wood from certified, responsible forest practices and regional supply chains.
SFI’s Fiber Sourcing Standard promotes responsible forestry practices across millions of acres, which helps conserve biodiversity, protect soil and water quality, support logger and forester training programs, provide landowner outreach and assistance, and invest in scientific research. This approach helps scale the impact of sustainable forestry – ensuring that increasing demand for responsible forestry wood products contributes to improved forest management outcomes.
